When we sat down in 2024 and took stock of language learning as a whole, we felt a little deflated. With an estimated 1.8 billion people currently learning a second (or third or fourth) language, it seemed we had replaced the days of rote memorisation with something equally cold and unenjoyable online. Points. Streaks. Fluency in 7 days. Leagues. Likes. Shares. Empty promises design to make you feel like trash the second you put your phone down and go live in the real world.
So we decided to zig when everyone else zagged. Skoshi was built for the real world. No streaks or stress for a start. Just connection, classes and new friends yet to meet. And as much as we'd like, we can't all drop everything and move to Asia (just yet). So Skoshi is our way of bringing a little piece of Asia to you.
We're also a big believer in celebrating moments. You know the type.
Recognising a new word in your favourite K-pop song. Successfully haggling over a 'Gucci' bag in a Bangkok night market. Cracking your first joke to a friend in perfect Chinese. These moments – these little victories – are what language learning is really about. In fact, that’s literally our name: Skoshi comes from the Japanese word, "sukoshi" (少し), meaning "a little bit."
So whether you’re planning a big trip abroad, impressing new relatives or just trying to understand Squid Game without subtitles, we’re building something pretty special and would love for you to join us.
